Abstract

George W. Catt graduated from Iowa Agricultural College (Iowa State University) with a B.S. (1882) in civil engineering. He helped design bridges for the King Bridge Company of Cleveland and the San Francisco Bridge Company. In 1893, Catt formed his own company, the New York Dredging Company. Catt married Carrie Lane Chapman in 1890. This collection contains biographical information, correspondence with Edgar Stanton, information about the Catt Scholarships, and a listing of books he bequeathed to the Iowa State College (University) Library. Also in the collection are images of dredges and the bridges Catt helped design.

 

Biographical note

George W. Catt was born March 9, 1860 in Davenport, Iowa. He received a B.S. (1882) in civil engineering from Iowa State Agricultural College (Iowa State University).

Catt worked (1882-1885) for the King Bridge Company of Cleveland, Ohio in their Des Moines, Iowa office. He then worked for the San Francisco Bridge Company. In 1893, Catt formed and became president of the New York Dredging Company. Soon after, he began the Atlantic Gulf and Pacific Company, of which he became president and manager.

On June 10, 1890, Catt married Carrie Lane Chapman. He died October 8, 1905 in New York City after a sudden illness. In accordance with his last will and testament, Catt's body was donated to medical science.

 

Collection description

This collection (1882-1891, undated) contains documents relating to George W. Catt. The materials include biographical information, two letters from Edgar Stanton, information about the Catt Scholarships and a listing of books he bequeathed to the Iowa State College (University) Library. Also in the collection are images of dredges and the bridges Catt helped design.
