Abstract

The Athletic Director (A.D.) at Iowa State University manages the entire Athletic Department. The A.D. hires the head coaches for all men's and women's varsity sports.  He will also be in charge of fundraising, creating a budget, and spending the money that comes in. The collection contains correspondence regarding scheduling, rules, and officials from the early days of Iowa State athletics. There are also contracts between Iowa State and other colleges for sporting events, a constitution written for the Missouri Valley Conference, rulebooks, newsletters, and reports.

 

Historical note

The Athletic Director (A.D.) at Iowa State University manages the entire Athletic Department. The A.D. will hire the head coaches for all men's and women's varsity sports. He will also be in charge of fundraising, creating a budget, and spending the money that comes in. 

Samuel Beyer was hailed as "a father of Iowa State athletics" by Earl Ross due to Beyer's service of running the athletic programs in Iowa State's early years (1898-1930 ca.). Beyer was instrumental in the formation of the Missouri Valley Conference, Iowa State's first conference affiliation (1907). He laid the foundation for those who would follow him as Iowa State athletic teams later participated in the Big 6, Big 7, Big 8, and Big 12 Conferences.
