Abstract
The Iowa State University Fashion Show is an annual event that began in 1982. The fashion show highlights student designs and demonstrates the creativity of students in the Apparel, Merchandising, Design, and Production Program (AMDP) of the Department of Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management (AESHM) at Iowa State. Students must be enrolled in AESHM 272 Fashion Show Production and Promotion or AESHM 472 Fashion Show Management in order to produce and promote the show. The Fashion Show originated from the annual style show that was showcased by the Textiles and Clothing Club during Iowa State's annual VEISHEA celebration. This collection (1982-2015) consists of materials documenting the planning and promotion of the Fashion Show. Video recordings of the show can be found by searching the Library catalog. |
Historical note
The Iowa State University Fashion Show is an annual event that began in 1982. The fashion show highlights student designs and demonstrates the creativity of students in the Apparel, Merchandising, Design, and Production Program (AMDP) of the Department of Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management (AESHM) at Iowa State. Students must be enrolled in AESHM 272 Fashion Show Production and Promotion or AESHM 472 Fashion Show Management in order to produce and promote the show. Financial support for the Fashion Show is raised by students through fundraising events held throughout the year along with money from ticket sales. Any student is able to submit their clothing or project designs which are judged in multiple categories. Judges for the show are usually Iowa State alumni of the apparel design program or fashion experts from the Midwest area. Each year, one or two guest designers from across the country are invited to showcase their designs during the show. Any student is allowed to audition to be a model for the show and receives one class credit for fulfilling their commitment to the show. The Fashion Show originated from the annual style show that was showcased by the Textiles and Clothing Club during VEISHEA. 1983 was the first year the production was called the Fashion Show. It was held during VEISHEA on the steps of MacKay Hall. The event was eventually moved to Fisher Theater as popularity grew. It was held there until 2004 when it was moved to C.Y. Stephens Auditorium to accommodate larger audiences. |
Collection description
This collection (1982-2015) consists of materials documenting the planning, promotion, and implementation of the Fashion Show. Records are organized chronologically and may contain awards information, correspondence, photographs, judging criteria and forms, programs, and promotional materials. Some years also include planning materials compiled by students who held the positions of set and technical director, producer, art director, and fundraising director among others. |
