Historical note

Pearl P. Swanson was born September 13, 1895 in Cokato, Minnesota. She received her B.S. (1916) in Home Economics from Carleton College, M.S. (1924) from the University of Minnesota, and Ph.D. (1930) from Yale University.

Swanson taught (1916-1918) high school chemistry at Faribault, Minnesota. She also held the positions of Instructor (1920-1922) of chemistry at Carleton College and Assistant Professor (1924-1927) of nutrition at Montana State College. She joined the Iowa State College (University) faculty as an Associate Professor (1930-1936) of Food and Nutrition and was promoted to Professor (1936 -1967). Swanson became Assistant Director (1944-1961) of the Iowa State Agricultural and Home Economics Experiment Station, making her the first woman in the United States to hold such a position.

Swanson's research centered on the area of nutrition, including the metabolism of proteins, interrelationships of nutrients, dietary requirements of reproductions, and inorganic salts. She also focused on changes in the diets of women as they age. Her research yielded nearly 90 papers and publications.

Swanson belonged to numerous professional and scientific societies and honorary organizations, such as the American Home Economics Association, the American Dietetics Association, Iowa Academy of Science, Phi Kappa Phi, and Omicron Nu. She received several awards and honors, including the Alexander Broune Cox Fellowship (1929-1930) at Yale University, the Outstanding Achievement Award (1951) from the University of Minnesota, the Borden Award in Nutrtion (1955), Faculty Citation (1958) from Iowa State, and the Iowa Award of Merit (1961) from Gamma Sigma Delta. The Pearl Swanson Graduate Fellowship was named in her honor when she retired in 1961.

Swanson died May 21, 1980.
