Biographical note

John McColl "Jack" Bremner was born to Archibald Donaldson and Sarah Kennedy (McColl) Bremner in Dumbarton, Scotland on January 18, 1922. He received his B.Sc. (1944) in pure science with first class honors in chemistry from the University of Glasgow. Bremner received his Ph.D. (1948) and later his D.Sc. (1959) in chemistry from the University of London. He was awarded an honorary D.Sc. (1987) from the University of Glasgow.

After receiving his undergraduate degree, Bremner was employed by Glasgow University as a Carnegie Research Scholar (1944-1945). He then worked for the Chemistry Department at Rothamsted Experimental Station, England, serving as Scientific Officer (1945-1949), Senior Scientific Officer (1949-1954), and Principal Scientific Officer (1954-1959). He joined the Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa in 1959. At Iowa State, he served as Associate Professor (1959-1961), Professor of Agronomy and Biochemistry (1961-1992), and was named Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture (1975-1992). In 1992 he was named a Distinguished Professor Emeritus.

Bremner received many honors and awards throughout his distinguished career. A few of these include: the Soil Science Achievement Award (1967) from the American Society of Agronomy; the Alexander von Humboldt Medal and Award (1982) from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany; the Bouyoucos Distinguished Career Award (1982) from the Soil Science Society of America; the Governor's Science Achievement Medal (1983) from the State of Iowa; the Harvey Wiley Medal and Award (1984) from the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (now AOAC International); the Spencer Medal and Award (1987) and the Award for Advancement of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (1988) from the American Chemical Society; and numerous awards and honors from Iowa State University. He was named a fellow of various societies and associations including: the American Society of Agronomy (1968), the American Association for Advancement of Science (1972), the Soil Science Society of America (1976), and the American Academy of Microbiology (1992). He was named Distinguished Fellow (1984) of the Iowa Academy of Science and that same year was elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences (1984). In addition, Bremner was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship (1957-1958) to research in the United States, he served as Technical Expert (1964-1965) on 15N research for the International Atomic Energy Agency in Yugoslavia and Austria, and he was named a Guggenheim Fellow (1968-1969) serving in Australia and Japan.

Bremner was a pioneering researcher and a prolific writer. His investigations into the nitrogen and sulfur chemistry of soils and the chemical nature of soil organic matter led to a new understanding of soil chemistry and biochemistry. Bremner created analytical methods for determining the different organic and inorganic forms of nitrogen in soil that became the international standard. His analytical methods for 15N-tracer research on the nitrogen cycle are widely accepted as the standard procedures to this day. His research on the nitrogen and sulfur transformations in soils had a direct impact on fertilizer usage in the United States and around the world. His investigations proved that nitrogen fertilizers do not significantly increase soil emissions of nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas, and thus helped to prevent a widespread ban on their use. Bremner was among the first to study agricultural causes of water and air pollution and studied ways to reduce pollution from nitrogen fertilizers by making them more efficient and effective. His many years of productive research resulted in more than 300 publications authored or co-authored by him, including 32 chapters in scientific monographs.

Throughout his life, Bremner struggled with a speech impediment that caused what he called a "stammer." This hardly affected his teaching or research though. At Iowa State, he developed and taught a highly regarded course on advanced soil biochemistry. He mentored 22 graduate students and guided them to the completion of their degrees. He attracted international researchers and scholars to Iowa State to study and work with him. He was highly respected by his colleagues and has been referred to as one of the world's most distinguished soil scientists of the 20th Century.

John Bremner married Eleanor Mary Williams and they had two children, Stuart and Carol. Bremner passed away on July 27, 2007. He was buried at the Iowa State University cemetery.

Collection description

The collection (1946-2008, n.d.) consists of biographical information, publications, and records of research projects completed by John M. Bremner. Biographical information consists of news clippings regarding his works, awards, and retirement; a list of honors and awards; curriculum vitae; photographs; and awards nominations and programs. A memorial symposium was held in Bremner's honor in 2008 and a file containing the speeches and presentations given at that symposium offers a thorough retrospective of his career.

The collection also includes published articles authored or co-authored by Bremner. The appendix contains a complete, chronological listing of Bremner's articles, many of which can be found in this collection. Much of his work deals with the chemical and biochemical composition of soils, especially the transformations of nitrogen and sulfur in soils.

Files related to Bremner's research projects include correspondence, proposals, and reports. He received research funding from a number of governmental and private entities and from this work published numerous articles and received one patent. Projects Bremner received funding for included: an assessment and reduction of problems associated with the use of urea as a fertilizer (funded by Allied Corporation); a study of natural and fertilizer-induced missions of nitrous oxide from soils (National Science Foundation); research on nitrogen transformations in soils affecting environmental quality (Rockefeller Foundation); a study on the isolation and characterization of clay-organic matter complexes in soils (Herman Frasch Foundation); research on the sorption of pollutant gases by soils (U.S. Department of Energy); research on the effects of pesticides on nitrogen transformations in soils (Tennessee Valley Authority); and studies on the control and management of nitrogen transformations in soils and the reduction of nitrogen pollution of surface and groundwaters (Iowa State Water Resources Research Institute). A file related to Bremner's patent is also in the collection.
