Fairbanks, Morse and Company (now Fairbanks Morse Engine) is the original U.S. manufacturer of customized medium-speed engine systems, parts and direct service solutions, and is currently (as of 2010) based in Beloit, Wisconsin. The United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, also known as UE, was formed in 1936. An independent union, unaffiliated with the AFL-CIO, the UE represents people in a variety of manufacturing, public sector and private non-profit sector jobs. UE operates on two basic principles: rank-and-file control and aggressive struggle: |
This collection (1941-1946) contains stenographic or verbatim transcripts of contract negotiations between Fairbanks, Morse and Company and the Local 922 of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America held in Three Rivers, Michigan. Also included is a verbatim report of the hearing before the War Labor Board (Region XI) between the two parties. The material in this collection was gathered by Iowa State University Emeritus Professor Harold Davey, who was a member of the Economics Department (1948-1985). From June 1, 1942 until December of 1942, Davey served as a Placement Officer attached to the National War Labor Board (NWLB). During this period he assisted Ralph Seward, head of the NWLB's Disputes Section, in recruiting a staff of professional neutrals for the Board's Washington office and its various regional offices. Davey served as a neutral in the period 1943-1945 as a hearing officer, special representative, and tripartite panel chairman for the NWLB, principally in NWLB's Region II office covering New York state and northern New Jersey. Davey wrote extensively for various academic journals on the labor arbitration process. Davey was also the author of a highly regarded book on the collective bargaining process, Contemporary Collective Bargaining (Archives call no. HD6508 D279c2).
