Historical note
The Iowa Livestock Feeders Association was founded in 1960 and was affiliated with the National Livestock Feeders Association. The Iowa association merged with the Iowa Beef Producers Association in 1972 to form the Iowa Cattlemen's Association. According to the Association's constitution, a copy of which can be found in the collection, the Association's purpose was to "provide the livestock feeders in the State of Iowa with an organization through which they may function collectively to protect their industry and work toward the solution of livestock feeding and livestock industry problems in the State and the National economy; to promote the importance of the livestock feeding industry; and to build the necessary good-will that will bring both governmental and public esteem and recognition to the industry." Although the Association sought the passage of favorable legislation for the livestock industry, it did not take part in party politics or endorse particular candidates. At the annual meetings, members passed resolutions for both state and national plans, policies, procedures, and public policy statements. Issues the Association addressed included legislation, regulations, taxation, government farm programs, pollution control, stockyard and feedlot concerns, livestock feed, livestock disease and medications, meat imports, meat standards, and industry promotion. |
Collection description
This collection (1959-1976, n.d.) contains constitution and bylaws, articles of incorporation, minutes and resolutions from annual meeting, Board of Directors meeting minutes, sample constitution and by-laws for the Local Livestock Feeders Association, correspondence, memoranda, bulletins, publications, membership material, annual reports, and legislation. The documents from the Iowa Livestock Feeders Association make up the bulk of the collection, but the collection also contains records from the National Livestock Feeders Association and national and state organizations. There are only a few items from several state organizations, and the national organizations are related to the interests of the Iowa Livestock Feeders Association. The Iowa Livestock Feeders Association's records include its constitution and bylaws, articles of incorporation, minutes and resolutions from annual meetings, Board of Directors meeting minutes, correspondence, memoranda, bulletins, publications, and membership materials. Membership material includes invitation letters, and financial documents such as bank statements, treasurer's reports, receipts, and remittance statements. The collection also contains documents concerning the proposed merger with the Iowa Beef Producer's Association including ballots from the merger vote. National Livestock Feeders Association's materials include copies of its constitution, resolutions, records of proceedings for annual meetings and conferences, annual reports, correspondence, membership information, financial statements and reports. In addition, included are addresses that were given at two of the National Livestock Feeders Association's Annual Conventions. The records from other national and state organizations include material from several Livestock Feeders and Beef Producer tours, such as reports summary statements and correspondence. Also included are USDA reports on livestock and stockyards and a report on animal drug certification from the FDA as well as legislation (Iowa and national) and an Iowa livestock census. |
