Biographical note

R. Edward Baur attended Iowa State College (University) in the late 1920s but did not receive a degree. He was a conservationist who lived near Van Meter, Iowa. Baur served as president of the Iowa Soil Conservation District Commission (1951-1954) and was also instrumental in forming a soil conservation recognition program conducted by the Des Moines Register and Tribune for twenty years. Also active in farm credit, Baur served on the Board of Directors of the Farm Credit Banks of Omaha, Nebraska.

Collection description

The collection (1950-1977, n.d.) includes conference materials, annual reports, programs, papers, correspondence, newspaper clippings, printed materials, reports, and publications. The collection contains writings by Baur including his correspondence, newspaper clippings, printed materials, reports, and publications. Baur wrote about soil conservation, farm credit, Living History Farms Foundation, and conservation and livestock organizations in which he was involved. The collection contains awards and certificates awarded to Baur from various organizations (Soil Conservation Society of America, Soil Conservation Committee of Iowa, Agricultural Council of America, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity Alumni, and the National Farm Institute). News clippings in the collection focus on Baur's election to various committees and associations. The news clippings best highlight Baur's contributions and achievements, along with papers and reports written by Baur (found in Box 1, Folder 13), and the House Hearing Testimony (Box 1, Folder 17).
