Historical note

Farmers in Boone County began to protest the construction of high-voltage transmission lines by Iowa Power and Light Company in 1972. Hearings before the Iowa Commerce Commission and suits entered in Iowa courts represented the efforts of these farmers to prevent the construction of the power lines along a route that the farmers felt would hinder their farming efforts.

 

Collection description

This collection (1969-1979, n.d.) contains documents relating to Commission hearings and court action, correspondence, lawyers notes regarding the construction of the power lines, and information about exhibits used in the court case. The collection contains information about several exhibits in the case such as: proposed routes of Iowa Power and Light Company, franchise, objectors lists, maps, request for right of eminent domain with accompanying maps of location of farms in Boone County, cost estimating design data 345 KV line relocation between Callendar and Urbandale, unified soil classification system, description of proposed line route, and description of property to be condemned. This collection also includes testimonies given by individuals and group organizations such as Glenn Walkup, Norman Armstrong, Carl Schnoor, and Stefan Trausch.
