Historical note

The Unification Church, formally known as the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity, was established in Korea in 1954 by Reverend Sun Myung Moon. Moon considered himself a prophet whose teachings were divinely inspired. The Unification Church believes its mission is to prepare humankind for the Messiah by unifying all forms of Christianity along its doctrinal lines. The Divine Principle is the main theological book of the Unification Church. Organizationally, the church is divided into national and state churches, which are affiliated with the Unification Church International. The Unification Church also has had numerous affiliated organizations, such as the Collegiate Association for the Research Principle (CARP), an association of students, and the Unification Community Action Program (Uni-C.A.P.), a community service program. The Unification Church is also known as the Tong Il movement, the Unified Family, and the Moon Organization. Its followers are often referred to as "Moonies."

The Unification Church was most prevalent in Iowa, including Ames, during the 1970s and 1980s. In June 1984 the Unification Church set up a base in Ames' Campustown after an absence of almost ten years. However, this center is no longer present. There was also a Unification Church of Iowa and a Unification Church of Des Moines.

The Religious Freedom Rally materials contain memorandums released by the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Freedom which was based in the Midwest and included representatives from Iowa. Several of these committees had been formed around the country to protest government involvement in religious affairs.
