Abstract

Organization founded in 1929 by a group of swine producers. In 1934 it began to receive an annual appropriation from the Iowa legislature. By 1968 it was no longer affiliated with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and was supported through dues and check-offs. Collection includes articles of incorporation; correspondence; financial statements; and minutes of annual meetings, board of directors meetings, and committee meetings.

Historical note

Originally named the Iowa Swine Growers Association (ISGA), the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) was established in 1929. A group of swine growers organized the Iowa Swine Producers' Association in 1929 during Farm and Home Week at Iowa State College (University), but did not receive recognition by the Iowa legislature until 1934 under the 47th General Assembly. Originally, the Association endeavored to address farm management issues, disease control and improving the genetics, breeding and nutrition of pigs. After more than thirty years of organizing and due to increased interest and membership, the name of the organization was changed in April 1968 to the Iowa Pork Producers Association. The association's current mission is "to provide a unified voice to promote and educate for a sustainable, socially responsible, profitable and globally competitive pork industry." Among their many achievements, IPPA strove to improve the feeder-pig importation within Iowa.

Iowa Pork Producers Association is still a respected organization and continues to work with Iowa's pork producers. Currently (as of 2010) there are eighty county associations in the state, and over 5,000 affiliated and associate members. Membership dues in the local county organization include membership in the IPPA and the National Pork Producers Council. The Iowa Pork Producers Association has been based in Clive, Iowa since 1981. Before 1981 they had space on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, and originally at Iowa's state capitol building.

Collection description

This collection (1934-2003, undated) contains articles of incorporation, meeting minutes dealing with committee appointments, donations, research done by and for the Iowa Pork Producers Association, programs, correspondence, resolutions, promotional materials, newspaper clippings, a flyer outlining IPPA's major achievements, financial statements, hog show rules and regulations, and several statements and bills fighting for recognition and partnership between IPPA and the Iowa legislature. Most of the correspondence consists of letters between its members and with the US House of Representatives. The minutes document meetings of the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and annual meetings. Most of the materials in the collection relate to the Iowa Swine Growers Association's research and general business before 1968, when the organization was renamed the Iowa Pork Producers Association.
