Historical note

As a result of an unsatisfactory rating in 1976, Ames City Council made plans to improve the Ames Municipal Airport and leave it at its original site, two miles outside the city. However, some criticized the plan, wanting the airport moved because it was interfering with the "quality of life" in the surrounding area. The City later decided that leaving the airport at its present site would not be in the best interests of residents of Ames, and thus began deliberating on the plan to relocate the airport to one of seven sites. The airport review committee began researching each site and after some discussion, it was decided that the airport would be relocated in between Ames and Boone and be accessible from US Highway 30. Soon after, however, Boone decided to pull out of the project.

Monday, December 1, 1980, marked the first meeting of the Story County Ag-Land Preservation Association (SCALPA), a group created in opposition of the proposed relocation of the Ames Municipal Airport on vital agricultural land using several millions of dollars in public funds. SCALPA, as it was soon called, was made up of concerned residents of Milford Township, one of the proposed relocation sites. They met at the Roland-Nevada Farmers Co-op to discuss the issue of the airport relocation and to find a solution that would not interfere with their agricultural livelihoods. During this first meeting, they named the organization, appointed a chairman and chose to hire a local attorney. They decided hiring an attorney was necessary if they were to represent themselves before the Airport Review Committee, a committee put in place to oversee the relocation and possible expansion of the airport.

Collection description

This collection (1977-1981, n.d.) contains news clippings, correspondence, minutes, agendas, and reports. The newsclippings detail plans for a new airport. The correspondence in this collection is separated into two categories: correspondence against the relocation of the Ames airport and correspondence for the relocation of the Ames airport. The minutes and agendas in this collection are from meetings of the Airport Review Committee and meeting material of the Story County (Iowa) Land Preservation Association which includes handwritten minutes, an airport layout plan, and signed petitions opposing the building of a new airport on farm land. The reports included in this collection deal with possible building sites and airport operations by the Iowa Department of Transportation. The collection also contains material concerning alternate airport building sites including memoranda, correspondence, reports about alternate building sites, and site maps.
