Historical note

Members of the Ames community and members of the Iowa State College (University) Botany and Horticulture Departments organized the Ames Garden Club in 1923. The first meeting was held in the Council Chamber of the Ames City Hall and Harry Brown became the club's first president. The Ames gardens open for inspection in those early years belonged to Harry Brown, Clyde Kintzley, J. W. Woodrow, L. B. Spinney, Adolph Shane, and W. H. Stevenson.

The purpose of the club, according to the 1969 Constitution of the Ames Garden Club, is to "promote interest and knowledge in the propagation and culture of flowers, trees, shrubs, and vegetables, native to or adaptable to this region; to learn of the flora and of other areas; to encourage the care and protection of plant and bird life; to foster city planting and beautification; and to learn how to best use plants and flowers in making our homes and gardens more attractive."

From its inception, the Ames Garden Club has been active in the Ames community. Some of the community projects the club has been involved in include sponsorship of the first Christmas Lighting Contests, promoting flower shows, active participation in the State Garden Club movement, and establishing a roadside park and picnic site north of the city.

In 1928 the Ames Garden Club became affiliated with the National Council of State Garden Clubs. This association allows Ames Garden Club members to participate in the many educational courses and activities sponsored by the State, Regional, and National organizations.

Membership in the Ames Garden Club is open to men and women of all ages and includes members from the Ames community and surrounding areas.
