Abstract

The United Farmers of Story County (Iowa) formed an association in the 1930s to advocate for equitable distribution of taxes, a moratorium on farm foreclosures, refinancing of farm debts, and social and economic equality for farmers. This collection contains a constitution and bylaws, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a speech given by member Sam J. Nelson at a farm sale which resulted in the sale's postponement. Sam J. Nelson served on the Board of Directors of the United Farmers of Story County.

 

Historical note

The United Farmers of Story County (Iowa) formed an association in the 1930s to advocate for equitable distribution of taxes, a moratorium on farm foreclosures, refinancing of farm debts, and social and economic equality for farmers. Membership in this organization was open to any person age 21 or above who resided in Story County and whose principal occupation was farming.

 

Collection description

This collection (1932, undated) contains a constitution and bylaws, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a speech given by member Sam J. Nelson at a farm sale which resulted in the sale's postponement. Correspondence includes a letter to Nelson from Charles E. Armstrong, new editor of the Nevada (Iowa) Evening Journal. The correspondence also includes a letter to Nelson from Professor Millard Peck of the Iowa State College (University) faculty regarding the renting of the Helland farm in Warren Township.
