Historical note

Playmakers (Ames, Iowa) is a local theater group begun in 1929. Originally, members met twice a month from October through May to rehearse and perform plays. The first yearbooks list only women as members, but men were included on the membership list starting in 1934-1935. The performance highlight of each year was guest night at MacKay Auditorium in the spring to which members were encouraged to bring non-member guests.

Members of the group participate in the direction and performance of plays, host meetings and provide refreshments (usually at members' homes), engage in the administration of the group through the election of officers, and produce programs and newsletters. Playmakers no longer hosts guest night once a year, but guests are now welcome to attend each meeting and performance. The group now has meetings just once a month, pays annual dues, and celebrates the beginning and ending of each season with a fall and spring picnic potluck. As of 2000, the directory lists nearly 40 members.
