This collection (circa 1870 - 1909, undated) contains the typescript for Capture and Prison Life of the 19th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, an account of Private W. I. Bragg's imprisonment, and two photographs related to the 19th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. The typescript describes the capture, march to prison camp, and captivity of Bragg and his fellow soldiers, taken prisoner by Confederate soldiers in Morganzia, Louisiana, on September 29, 1863 and marched to Camp Ford, a prison camp located in Tyler, Texas. Bragg and his fellow soldiers were exchanged after ten months in captivity and released in New Orleans, Louisiana, on July 24, 1864. The photographs include a group photograph of members from the 8th, 19th, and 25th Iowa Infantry taken in Washington, Iowa, in September 1909, by D.S. Cole and an undated photograph of Corporal John W. Morton, 19th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, and two other unidentified men. |
