Historical note

On October 12, 1934, a group of scientists representing the brewing and malting industries met in New York City to discuss and compare various methods of malt analysis. Organized as the Malt Analysis Standardization Committee, this group achieved great success in its endeavor and later appointed a subcommittee to deal with beer analysis. The American Society of Brewing Chemists (ASBC) grew from these two committees and on November 20, 1935, this permanent entity was incorporated in the State of Illinois. Currently (as of 2008), it is headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The ASBC is a professional organization dedicated to improvement in the brewing and malting industries. According to the Society's by-laws, its primary function is "to study, develop and adopt uniform or standard methods for the analysis of raw materials, supplies and products for and of the brewing, malting and related industries." The ASBC conducts and promotes further research in these areas and recognizes the importance of scientific endeavor in the development of brewing and allied industries. In conjunction, the organization holds regular meetings for the purpose of presenting scientific papers and reports relating to brewing and malting techniques.

Collection description

This collection (1934-[ongoing]) contains records of the American Society of Brewing Chemists including correspondence, Board of Directors materials, and committee files. The correspondence includes general correspondence as well as letters between the Executive Secretary and the Association's officers. The committee records include material related to the Constitution and By-laws Committee, the Editorial Committee, the Executive Committee, the Finance Committee, the Membership Committee, the Nominating Committee, and the Technical Committee, as well as others. Other records contained in the collection include information on annual awards, material pertaining to convention planning, reference files, and photographs.
