Hilarius L. "Larry" Heying, a poultry farmer and businessman based in West Union, Iowa, also served as an Iowa state senator from 1964-1968 and 1972-1976. Josephine Marie Heying, his wife since 1937, was employed at Heying Chick and Supply (1945-1970); as secretary to her husband (1964-1968, 1972-1976); as owner of Heying Enterprises, Inc., and as President of Heying Firms, Inc. The Heyings became interested in producing their own energy during the oil crisis in 1974. Predictions of gasoline rationing prompted them to explore ways to make their farm self-sufficient. With the help of a $50,000 matching grant from the Iowa State Energy Policy Council, Heying installed an agricultural waste handling system, designed by Sunny Time Foods of Des Moines. This system used poultry waste to produce methane gas which powered a generator. |
This collection (1970-1989, undated) consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, notes, reports, and a speech given by Senator Heying relating to the Heyings' waste handling system. Also included are plans for the farm methane gas power system. A schedule for operation of the poultry waste handling system, grant proposals and a description of Sunny Time's agricultural waste handling system are also included. They were donated to the Department of Special Collections by Josephine Heying in 1991. |
This collection is arranged by subject. |
