Abstract

Terry Anderson, a 1974 graduate of Iowa State University, was the chief Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press in Beirut, Lebanon, when he was kidnapped on March 16, 1985. Anderson was held in captivity for six years and nine months before he was freed by his captors, who were associated with Hizballah and the Islamic Jihad organization. After his release, Anderson wrote a memoir about his experiences, Den of Lions, and taught journalism courses at several different colleges and universities. The collection contains artifacts, audiovisual materials, court documents, correspondence, publications, publicity materials, subject files, and working files related to his captivity and memoir research, which included a large volume of materials related to requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Materials date from 1983 to 2004, though most of the documents are dated during Anderson’s period of captivity and the early 1990s when he conducted research for his book. Many of the materials dated in the 1980s were acquired after Anderson’s release from federal government agencies through Freedom of Information Act requests.

Biographical note

Terry A. Anderson was born on October 27, 1947, in Lorain, Ohio. He spent most of his formative years in Batavia, New York, where he graduated from high school in 1965. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for a six-year period, during which he met and married his first wife, Mihoko, in Japan. After leaving the Marine Corps, Anderson matriculated at Iowa State University and graduated with degrees in journalism and mass communication and political science (1974). Upon graduation, he became a writer for the Associated Press (AP).

In 1983, Anderson was assigned to the position of chief Middle East correspondent in the AP's Beirut, Lebanon, office. At the time, Lebanon was in the midst of a fifteen-year civil war (1975-1990. In October 1983, two military barracks in Beirut were destroyed by suicide bombers. The acts, which killed French and American soldiers and Lebanese civilians, were claimed by a group called Islamic Jihad, an organization with a nebulous relationship to Hizballah, the fundamentalist political party and militia still present in Lebanon.

On March 16, 1985, Anderson was kidnapped from the streets of Beirut after finishing a tennis game with AP photographer Don Mell. Since Mell witnessed the kidnapping but was not abducted, the Associated Press and Anderson’s family were alerted fairly quickly of the event, which, like the bombings, was claimed by Islamic Jihad. Anderson’s captivity lasted for six years and nine months; he was released on December 4, 1991. Though he was in solitary confinement at times, Anderson also crossed paths with a number of other kidnapping victims during his imprisonment, including David Jacobsen, Father Martin Jenco, Thomas Sutherland (MS 1956, PhD. 1958), Terry Waite, and Ben Weir.

While Anderson was held in and around Lebanon, his older sister Peggy Say became the most visible member of the family. She spent his period of captivity in the public eye, making media appearances and lobbying local, state, and federal government officials on his behalf. Say also wrote a memoir, Forgotten, published in February of 1991, several months before her brother was freed.

Upon his release, Anderson married Madeleine Bassil and began work on his memoir, Den of Lions, published in 1993. While conducting research for the book, Anderson filed a number of requests for information about his captivity and other related kidnappings from federal agencies under the Freedom of Information Act; this led to a lawsuit against these agencies regarding failure to comply. The lawsuit was dismissed with a motion for summary judgment in August 1999. In both his research and litigation efforts, Anderson was aided by the non-profit organization National Security Archive. Later, Anderson taught journalism at institutions including the University of Kentucky, Ohio University, and Syracuse University. In 2004, Anderson was the Democratic candidate for a seat in the Ohio Senate, but he lost in the general election. Anderson had two daughters, Gabrielle (1975) and Sulome (1986).

Collection description

The Terry A. Anderson Papers (1983-2004, undated) document Associated Press journalist Anderson’s captivity from 1985 to 1991; his research in regards to the kidnapping victims of Islamic Jihad in the late 1980s; and his efforts to recover classified documents from the United States government. Material types include artifacts, audiocassettes, videocassettes, clippings, correspondence, court documents, photographs, publications, publicity materials, subject files, and working files that were actively used in Anderson’s projects. Most materials date from 1983 to 2004, though many of the documents originate from the period of Anderson’s kidnapping to his research for Den of Lions. A large portion of papers from the 1980s were acquired after Anderson’s release from federal government agencies through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Some items in the collection may have been acquired by his sister, Peggy Say. She also appears frequently in the collection, particularly the audiovisual materials and publicity-related items, due to her advocacy for Anderson during his captivity. Arabic names that appear in the collection translated into different forms have been given uniform names using the Library of Congress name authority files. The majority of the collection is in English, with some Arabic and French language materials.

Audiovisual materials include audiocassettes, micro audiocassettes, and videocassettes of music and media related to Terry Anderson's disappearance, captivity, and release; other hostages' capture and release in the late 1980s and early 1990s; and his family's advocacy on his behalf, particularly his sister Peggy Say and fiancée Madeleine Bassil. For most of the items, titles have been transcribed and are included in Appendix A for audiocassettes and Appendix B for videocassettes. Items that were included with the cassettes include correspondence, notes, and sheet music; these are housed in folders in the cassette tapes cartons.

Correspondence has been written by Anderson, his family members, and others involved in advocating for his release or supporting his FOIA-related lawsuit. Artifacts include items given to Anderson, including ornaments, a plaque commemorating an honorary membership, and an American flag.

Court documents in the collection refer to Anderson's lawsuit Terry Anderson v. Central Intelligence Agency, et al., 63 F. Supp. 2d 28, 30 (D.D.C. 1999), litigated in the U.S. District Court, Washington, D.C. The files contain correspondence with the National Security Archives, lawyers at the firm Cromwell & Moring, and various federal agencies. Original order has been preserved where possible to reflect the course of the case, which generally corresponds to chronological order.

Publications and publicity materials in the collection reflect media coverage of Anderson's kidnapping and release, his family's advocacy, other kidnappings in Lebanon, and awards and memorials. Materials from after his release document "welcome home" events and publicity upon the release of his memoir Den of Lions.

The collection's subject files contain articles, chronological files documenting press during Anderson's captivity, correspondence, and FOIA documents on specific topics and individuals related to Anderson's captivity and the political events of that time period. They are arranged in alphabetical order, which roughly corresponds to original order.

Working files were maintained separately from the subject files and point to specific figures or subjects, often corresponding to topics that appear in Den of Lions.
