Biographical note

Mary Krumboltz Hurd received her B.S. in Engineering from Iowa State University in 1947. During the period 1947 through 1976, she was employed by the American Concrete Institute for nearly fifteen years, as staff engineer and earlier as associate editor. During the remainder of that 30 year period, her time was spent in consulting work; graduate study at the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois; and in attending to family responsibilities. In 1976 she began working as an engineering/writer/consultant, preparing technical reports and programs for companies and individuals. In 1981 she became the editor-in-chief of Concrete Construction and later served as the senior engineering editor. She is a member of numerous societies and organizations, including the Society for Technical Communication, the American Society of Civil Engineers (Life Member), Tau Beta Pi, and is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute. She received the Henry C. Turner Medal from the American Concrete Institute in March of 1995. She was also the recipient of the Marston Medal (2004) given by the Iowa State University College of Engineering which honors alumni for outstanding achievement in engineering. Hurd died on September 27, 2013.

Collection description

This collection (1943-[ongoing]) contains biographical information, clippings, minutes, programs, professional correspondence, publications, and awards.

Her undergraduate years at Iowa State are represented by a newspaper clipping depicting her working on her engineering degree and materials pertaining to her induction into Tau Beta Pi, the National Engineering Honor Society. She received a woman's badge from Tau Beta Pi in 1946 (as women were not allowed to become members) and received correspondence in 1970-1971 inviting her to finally become a member.

The professional correspondence documents her years, contacts, and experience with the American Concrete Institute. The publications series contains 2 seminar pamphlets, an article, "Illinois Students Build Ferro-Canoe," and several concrete journals with articles about Hurd. Of special interest is a copy of Hurd's work Formwork for Concrete (1963), an industry standard, and a color glass transparency of Hurd standing beside a Fermi simulator. There are five programs with information concerning Hurd and awards that she received, including the Construction Practice Award (1982 and 1988), a Professional Achievement Citation in Engineering (1982), the Delmar L. Bloem Award for Distinguished Service (1990), the Henry C. Turner Medal (1995) and the Marston Medal (2004). The remainder of the collection includes Hurd's correspondence, programs, minutes, notes and a paper for conferences and seminars on concrete.
