The Iowa Barn Foundation (IBF) was founded in 1997 with the intent of preserving Iowa’s rural buildings. IBF is a non-profit corporation and consists of a board of directors and county representatives. The Foundation offers education about the rural heritage of Iowa and the importance of barn preservation. IBF provides matching grants to property owners who wish to restore their qualified barns, win which the property owners sign an easement stating all future owners must keep the barns in good repair. IBF rewards property owners who restore their barns at their own expense with an Award of Distinction. IBF also promotes farm conservancy by accepting gifts of efficient and economically self-sustaining farmland and farms, and they protect these farms indefinitely according the owner’s requests. Funding for these projects has been raised privately, and the organization is managed by volunteers. IBF produces the Iowa Barn Foundation Magazine biannually and offers an annual All-State Barn Tour. |
