Historical note

The American Veterinary Medical History Society (AVMHS) was conceived in 1959 by a small group of veterinarians interested in recording the history of veterinary science. They hoped to make the history of veterinary medicine available in an interesting way to other veterinarians and the public. The society was dormant until 1971 when the American Veterinary Medical Association adopted a resolution to study the feasibility of creating a national veterinary museum and archives. This resolution renewed the original group's interest in their own society and eventually encouraged them to promote research and study on veterinary history and related topics through the publication of a journal/newsletter and annual meetings. Originally the society was named the American Veterinary History Society, but by 1999 the society had changed its name to the American Veterinary Medical History Society in order to provide a more consistent use of the term veterinary medicine.

The AVMHS seeks out published and unpublished materials and artifacts pertaining to the history of veterinary medicine and the health care of animals in North and South America as well as records of the "remembered" past from as many veterinarians as possible. These materials are then placed in suitable archives. Furthermore, the society develops and distributes educational materials on the history of veterinary medicine, and encourages members and students to assess the role of veterinarians in society and to study veterinarians' impact on animal and human medicine and scientific research.

 

Collection description

This collection (1931-[ongoing]) contains incorporation materials, bylaws, correspondence, financial reports, annual meeting information, and materials relating to the annual student essay contest. The collection does not contain many materials before the 1990s. Most of the collection consists of correspondence between its members or from the public, documenting the administration of the society. Subjects include the organization's name change, their relationship with other organizations such as the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Association for Women Veterinarians, and exhibitions and publications relating to the history of veterinary medicine with which the society assisted.
