Abstract
The National Association of Teacher Educators for Family and Consumer Sciences (NATEFACS) (formerly the National Association of Teacher Educators Vocational Home Economics - NATEVHE) was founded in 1951 to facilitate colleague relationships among home economics teacher educators. The group is affiliated with the Family and Consumer Sciences Education (formerly Home Economics) Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education (formerly the American Vocational Association). This collection contains annual meeting programs, committee meeting correspondence and minutes, financial records, published materials, newsletters, directories, and oral history transcripts. These records were created by the National Association of Teacher Educators for Vocational Home Economics (NATEVHE), but include information concerning other groups affiliated with the National Vocational Association such as the National Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (NATFACS). Materials related to the National Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (NATFACS) include handbooks and scrapbooks. |
Historical note
The National Association of Teacher Educators for Family and Consumer Sciences (NATEFACS) (formerly the National Association of Teacher Educators Vocational Home Economics - NATEVHE) was founded in 1951 to facilitate colleague relationships among home economics teacher educators. The group is affiliated with the Family and Consumer Sciences Education (formerly Home Economics) Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education (formerly the American Vocational Association). The American Vocational Association (AVA) was formed in 1926 when the National Society for Vocational Education and the Vocational Education Association of the Middle West came together, with the purpose of helping individual vocational educators and institutions. In 2001 the name was changed to the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE). The mission of the Association is "to develop and promote comprehensive programs of vocational education through which individuals are developed to a level of occupational performance commensurate with their innate potential and the needs of society." There are 12 divisions within the American Vocational Association, including: Administration; Agricultural Education; Business Education; Engineering and Technology Education; Family and Consumer Sciences Education; Guidance and Career Development; Health Science Education; Marketing Education; New and Related Services; Postsecondary, Adult and Career Education; Trade and Industrial Education. Former divisions included Administration, Agriculture, Business and Office, Distributive, Guidance, Health Occupations, Home Economics, Industrial Arts, Manpower, New and Related Services, Technical and Trade, and Industrial. Within the Family and Consumer Sciences Education Division of ACTE are several sections/affiliated groups such as the National Association of Teacher Educators for Family and Consumer Sciences (NATEFACS), the National Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (NATFACS), and the National Association State Administrators of Family and Consumer Sciences (NASAFACS). Past affiliates include the National Association of Local Supervisors of Vocational Home Economics (NALSVHE), the National Extension Homemakers Council (NEHC), and the American Home Economics Council (AHEC). The National Association Teacher Educators Family and Consumer Sciences (NATEFACS), is closely related to the National Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (NATFACS), formerly the National Association of Vocational Home Economics Teachers (NAVHET). |
Collection description
This (1950-[ongoing]) collection contains annual meeting programs, committee meeting correspondence and minutes, financial records, published materials, newsletters, directories, and oral history transcripts. These records were created by the National Association of Teacher Educators for Vocational Home Economics (NATEVHE), but include information concerning other groups affiliated with the National Vocational Association such as the National Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (NATFACS). The collection for the National Association of Vocational Home Economics Teachers (NATEVHE/NAVHET) includes programs, minutes, and information about annual meetings (1969-1993), committee correspondence and minutes, financial records, and newsletters, and handbooks comprise the majority of the records. The committees documented include Ad hoc, Awards, Evaluation, History, Legislative, Membership, Newsletter, Nominating, Policy and Planning, and Recorder Committees. In the early 1980s the U.S. Congress was involved in reauthorizing the Vocational Act of 1963 and the Legislative Committee files illustrate the role of home economics teachers across the United States attempting to communicate to Congress their goals and needs. Materials related to the National Association Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (NATFACS) include handbooks and scrapbooks. |
