The Professional and Service Division of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), later renamed the Work Projects Administration, worked on all non-construction related projects of the WPA. The division was divided into three sections: community service, welfare, and research and records. The division employed certified teachers, recreation leaders, artists, writers, clerical workers, library assistants, seamstresses, and people of other professions. This collection contains two scrapbooks with correspondence (carbon copies), reports (carbon copies), photographs, publications, and promotional material documenting WPA of the Professional and Service Division projects in Iowa. Departments and projects documented include the Iowa Craft Project, Education, Recreation, Research and Records, Art, Music, Writers, and Historical Records. |
The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was established on May 6, 1935 and assumed many of the federal government's work relief activities. The Works Progress Administration was later renamed the Work Projects Administration on July 1, 1939 when it was placed under the Federal Works Agency (FWA). The Professional and Service Division of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) worked on all non-construction related projects of the WPA. The division was divided into three sections: community service, welfare, and research and records. The division employed certified teachers, recreation leaders, artists, writers, clerical workers, library assistants, seamstresses, and people of other professions. |
