Abstract

The Farm Service Agency (FSA) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was established in 1995 to provide agricultural programs to farmers, ranchers, and agricultural partners. The FSA provides access to historic aerial photography collected by USDA at approximately seven-year intervals. The Iowa State FSA Office collected prints of aerial photographs of Iowa counties from the early 1960s through the early 1980s. The collection contains contact prints of aerial photographs of Iowa taken by county along several flight lines.

 

Historical note

The Farm Service Agency (FSA) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was established in 1995 during a reorganization of the USDA, but the beginnings of such an agency goes back to the 1935 establishment of the Farm Security Administration. The FSA's mission is to serve "all farmers, ranchers, and agricultural partners through the delivery of effective, efficient agricultural programs for all Americans." One such program is the provision of historic aerial photography, created by the USDA at approximately seven-year intervals, and made available through the USDA's Aerial Photography Field Office. The county offices of the Iowa State FSA Office collected prints of Iowa counties from the early 1960s through the early 1980s.

 

Collection description

The collection (1963-1984) contains contact prints of aerial photographs of Iowa taken by county along several flight lines. The bulk of the photographs were taken in the 1970s, but there are some from the 1960s and 1980s. All 99 counties are included.
