The Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Agronomy was organized in 1914, but became inactive during World War I. On November 24, 1920, Professor Stevenson and Dr. Brown of Iowa State College (University) held a meeting to re-establish the society. The objective of the chapter was to contribute to human welfare by encouraging effective research and the best methods of disseminating the knowledge gained from this research in soils, crops, and climatology. The chapter promoted professional improvement of its members and those activities by which its members maintained high standards of excellence. Membership was automatic to any member of the American Society of Agronomy residing in Iowa. The chapter officers consisted of a President, Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer, which constituted the Executive Committee. The officers were elected annually by ballot at the regular meeting in December. The officers could not continue in office for more than one year. The organization had regular meetings on the third Monday of each month from November 1 to March 31, inclusive, excluding vacations and with other exceptions as was deemed advisable by the Executive Committee. The functions of the organization were: the Agronomy Department picnic held in the third week of May each year, the organization and/or arrangement of transportation for chapter members to the national meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, and a field trip to the Agronomy Farm or elsewhere held the last week of August. No dues were assessed to members, but for each social function an adequate assessment was levied and collected by the Secretary-Treasurer. The By-Laws could be amended by a majority vote of the members at a regular chapter meeting. The Iowa chapter disbanded around1992-1993. |
The collection (1920-1976, undated) contains by-laws, meeting minutes, North Central Branch Meetings Program Committee materials, and an activities file for 1976. |
