Abstract

This collection (circa 1920s-1930s) consists of a German manuscript titled Technologie written by Schlösser (author's first name is unknown). The approximately fifty-page manuscript includes inserts and diagrams amongst the handwritten pages. The text deals with the following subjects: ore and iron combinations with other metals or non-metallic substances; various kinds of combustible materials and their chemical compositions; production of gases from coal that burns at temperatures high enough to melt iron and to cause iron to combine with other substances such as sulfur; detailed descriptions of a blast furnace and the processes taking place in the furnace; descriptions of the Thomas Process and Siemens Process to operate a blast furnace; and the products that can be produced from iron.

Collection description

This collection (circa 1920s-1930s) consists of a German manuscript titled Technologie written by Schlösser (author's first name is unknown). The approximately fifty-page manuscript includes printed inserts and diagrams amongst the handwritten pages. The manuscript is in handwritten in German in a lined notebook.

Ursula von Godany, Collections Librarian at Iowa State University, reviewed the manuscript in 1992 and believes it to either be a manuscript for a textbook or notes taken from a more elaborate textbook on iron metallurgy and fabrication. Von Godany noted that the level and style of writing indicates it was probably not a university level text, but perhaps one used in a vocational program or for in-house factory training.

The text deals with the following subjects: ore and iron combinations with other metals or non-metallic substances; various kinds of combustible materials such as wood, coal, and peat, and their chemical compositions by percent of content components; how to produce gases from coal that burns at temperatures high enough to melt iron and to cause iron to combine with other substances such as sulfur; detailed descriptions of a blast furnace and the processes taking place in the furnace as well as illustrations; descriptions of Thomas Process and Siemens Process to operate a blast furnace; and the products that can be produced from iron.
