Historical note
In 1970, the Rural Housing Alliance began seeking funds for a foundation that would go beyond housing and would also address such issues as rural health, transportation, and community development. Although interest in such an organization was at first limited, eventually interest grew and Rural America was formed in 1970 as a nonprofit membership organization. The aim of the organization was to give people in rural areas and small towns a stronger voice in Washington, help people in rural areas to improve their social and economic position, and to run a technical assistance and support program in a variety of areas including housing, energy, land use, community development and community education. Rural America's principal goal was to assure rural people equity in the formulation and implementation of public policies and programs. Rural America was centered in Washington, D.C. |
Collection description
This collection (1970-1982, undated) contains brochures and programs from Rural America's first and third National Conferences, a list of board members, correspondence, memorandums, publications, annual reports, and housing reports. Much of the collection includes records from the Rural Housing Alliance. The annual reports are by Rural America, the Rural Housing Alliance, and American Friends Service Committee (a Quaker organization committed to social justice, peace, and humanitarian service). Publications include specialized papers such as the Rural American Research Reports and Rural Health Reports, housing reports by the Rural Housing Alliance, and a report on rural housing in Alabama by American Friends Service committee. |
