Abstract

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is the national professional organization for landscape architects. ASLA’s mission is "to lead, to educate, and to participate in the careful stewardship, wise planning, and artful design of our cultural and natural environments." This collection contains 103 lantern slides of various gardens primarily in New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut and New Jersey. Photographs were taken by Bill Tischler.

 

Historical note

ASLA was founded January 4, 1899 to to "establish landscape architecture as a recognized profession in North America," "develop educational studies in landscape architecture," and "provide a voice of authority in the New Profession."

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is the national professional organization for landscape architects. ASLA’s mission is "to lead, to educate, and to participate in the careful stewardship, wise planning, and artful design of our cultural and natural environments." ASLA represents approximately 17,000 members in 49 professional chapters and 68 student chapters in all 50 states and U.S. territories, plus 42 countries around the world.

Iowa State University was declared an ASLA Centennial Medallion site in 1999, for superior landscape architecture on central campus.

 

Collection description

This collection (undated) contains 103 lantern slides of various gardens primarily in New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut and New Jersey. The slides were for the "Distinguished American Gardens Illustrated Lecture" series. Photographs were taken by Bill Tischler. The majority of the images appear to be from the 1920s.

The collection is arranged in its original order. When possible, descriptions on the lantern slides are used for the folder titles.
