Historical note

The Iowa Grain and Feed Association (IGFA) was organized in 1899 as the Iowa Grain Dealers Association. A group of one hundred and fifty elevator operators organized the association in order to gain the benefits of a united group within the industry. The association promoted the interests of the grain and feed industry, offered technical advice and services to its membership, made the association's concerns heard by Iowa's elected officials in Congress, updated its members on regulations affecting the industry, and sponsored research on the production and processing of grain. Once the largest state grain and feed association in the nation, with a membership of more than one thousand two hundred, membership in the association included grain, feed, fertilizer and farm supply businesses and included both independent and cooperative agribusinesses with a diversity of types and sizes.

The association went through multiple name changes, many the result of mergers with other state trade groups:  Western Grain Dealers Mutual Fire Insurance Company (1907), Western Grain Dealers Association (1908), Western Grain and Feed Dealers Association, Western Grain and Feed Association, Western Grain Feed Association of Iowa, and finally the Iowa Grain and Feed Association (1962).

In 1993, the Iowa Grain and Feed Association merged into the Iowa Fertilizer and Chemical Association (IFCA) to become the Agribusiness Association of Iowa in 1994.

Collection description

The collection (1951-1988, undated) contains correspondence, directories, ledgers, conference materials, publications of the association, bulletins and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) publications relating to grain handling facilities. The bulletins contain reports on the association's activities, actions taken, updates on current research and legislation, and other information on topics relevant to association members. In addition to the separate files related to OSHA standards, the bulletins also quite frequently contain information on OSHA standards, hazardous waste and other regulations affecting the industry.
