Historical note

The International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) was first proposed in 1968 by English veterinarians interested in a global exchange of ideas regarding swine production and disease. A constitution was adopted at the first congress held in Cambridge, England, in 1969 and international congresses were held biennially starting in 1972. The objectives of the organization are to: promote the exchange of information regarding pig health and disease by holding International Congresses; form Pig Veterinary Societies in all countries and promote cooperation between them; and coordinate meetings between national societies for the discussion of topics of common interest.

In 1976, the first congress held in the United States took place on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. Dr. Norman E. Hutton, Congress Secretary and Associate Dean of the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine, was responsible for making local arrangements for the congress.
