Biographical note

Dr. Nina M. Roscher was professor and chair of the Chemistry Department at the American University in Washington D.C. In addition, she served as vice provost for academic affairs, dean for faculty affairs, associate dean for graduate studies and chair of the university senate. She received a B.S. (1960) in chemistry from the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. (1964) from Purdue University. Her research was in the fields of physical organic chemistry and the history of women in chemistry. She conducted research for Johnson and Johnson in the 1980s and authored the book, Women Chemists (1995) written for the American Chemical Society. She was awarded the 1996 American Chemical Society Award for Encouraging Women in the Chemical Sciences; a 1997 fellowship in the Association for Women in Science; a 1982 national honorary membership in Sigma Delta Epsilon for Graduate Women in Science; and, in 1998, a Senior Scholar Special Commendation of Honor from the American Association of University Women. Her other honors included being named a Distinguished Alumna of Purdue University in 1996, being named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1987 and being a senior program officer at the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Roscher died September 19, 2001.
