Biographical note

 
C. Frederick Mosteller was born (December 24, 1916) Charles Frederick Mosteller in Clarksburg, West Virginia, the son of Helen Kelley Mosteller and William Roy Mosteller.  

Mosteller graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology with a B.S. (1938) and a M.S. (1939) in Mathematics.  He graduated from Princeton University with an AM (1942) and a PhD in Mathematics (1946).  Mosteller was awarded honorary degrees from the University of Chicago (DSc 1973), Carnegie-Mellon University (DSc 1974), Yale University (DSSc 1981), Wesleyan University (DSc 1983), and Harvard University (LLD 1991).  

Mosteller's entire professional career was spent with Harvard University.  He was employed as a lecturer in and research associate at the Department of Social Relations (1946-1951), served as acting chairman of the Department of Social Relations (1953-1954), designated a Professor of Mathematic Statistics (1951-1957), served as Chairman of the Department of Statistics (1957-1969, Acting 1973, 1975-1976), served as Chairman of the Department of Biostatistics (1977-1981), was named a Roger I .Lee Professor (1978), served as Chairman of the Department of Health Policy and Management (1981-1987), and was designated Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Statistics (1988).  

Mosteller was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  Mosteller served as president of the Psychometric Society (1957-1958), American Statistical Association (1967), Institute of Mathematical Statistics (1974-1975), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1980).  He served a chairman of the board of directors of the Social Science Research Council (1965-1969), and as vice-president of the International Statistical Institute (1985-1987).  Mosteller also served on the board of directors of the Russell Sage Foundation (1964-1985).  

Mosteller's research interests were theoretical statistics and its application to education, social science, health and medicine, public policy, industry, data analysis, and sports.   

Mosteller married Virginia Gilroy in May 1941 with whom he had two children, a son William (1947) and a daughter Gale (1953).

The collection primarily documents C. Frederick Mosteller's affiliation with the American Statistical Association and the International Statistical Institute, and his time as a faculty member of Harvard University.  The collection contains three series:  Series 1, American Statistical Association Records (1965-1996, n.d.); Series 2, Harvard University Records (1919-1999, n.d.); and Series 3, International Statistical Institute Records (1991-1996).  

Series 1, American Statistical Association Records documents Mosteller's affiliation with the association.  The records include agendas, annual meeting files, committee files, correspondence, an interview, minutes, notes, presentations, publications, and speeches.  

Series 2, Harvard University Records documents Mosteller's career at Harvard University.  The records include awards, committee records, consulting files, correspondence, grants, memoranda, negatives (2 B&W 4x5), photographs

(27 B&W 5x7, and 24 B&W 8x10), publications, reference files, reports, research files, studies, talks, and transparencies.   

Series 3, International Statistical Institute Records documents Mosteller's affiliation with the association.  The records include financial records, meeting minutes and agendas, papers, reports, speeches and a survey.    

Series 4, Miscellaneous Papers contains various materials.  The records include travel-related correspondence and reference materials.
