Community Action Research Group (CARG) was a small group of public interest researchers and advocates that was located in Ames, Iowa. It existed from 1977 through 1986. CARG grew out of what was then the Iowa Student Public Interest Research Group (ISPIRG, which had a student chapter at Iowa State University). When the PIRG ran into financial troubles in the mid-1970s, several members branched off to form another group, CARG. CARG spawned two minor subsidiary organizations: the CARG Litigation Project and the New Criteria Publishing Company. In addition, CARG spawned the Iowa Citizen/Labor Energy Coalition (C/LEC) in 1979, which became the Iowa Citizen Action Network in 1983 and continues to be active. |
This collection includes correspondence, budget reports, meeting minutes, a press release and the group's by-laws. |
