Stanley L. Weinberg was born on August 21, 1911 in New York City, New York to Morris and Ethel Newman Weinberg. He graduated from City College of New York with a B.S. (1933) in biology and from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University) in 1971 with a Masters degree. Weinberg's professional career started at the Bronx High School of Science where he taught science courses. He continued to teach science courses in New York City from 1935-1957. At one time he served as chairman of the biology department for Seward Park High School, New York. After moving to his wife's home town of Ottumwa, Iowa in 1967, he taught at Ottumwa High School, Iowa (1970-1971). Weinberg authored several textbooks and lab manuals on biology, including Biology: An Inquiry Into the Nature of Life and also co-edited Reviews of Thirty-One Creationist Books (1984). In 1981, Weinberg founded the Committees of Correspondence in response to the creation science movement, which encouraged public schools to give a balanced view of both evolution and scientific creationism and promoted the introduction of state bills and resolutions to put this practice into law. Weinberg worked to create a nationwide network of the Committees of Correspondence, inspired by the work of the Committees of Correspondence before and during the Revolutionary War. Weinberg's vision was that there would be a Committee of Correspondence organized in each state as a grassroots network of scientists and teachers ready to respond to creationist initiatives, often through sending correspondence to people within the movement and to legislators in their home states. By the end of 1981 there were Committees of Correspondence in 42 states. The first national meeting of the Committees of Correspondence was held in 1982 at the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference. The goals of the Committees of Correspondence were continued by the National Center for Science Education in 1983. The National Center for Science Education promotes the teaching of the scientific theory of evolution in public schools. Weinberg married Irene Meyer on December 28, 1952, with whom he had two daughters, Ellen and Susan. Stanley Weinberg died March 21, 2001. |
The collection (1927-2001, undated) includes correspondence, financial records, subject files, and research material which document Weinberg's relationship with the Committees of Correspondence and the creationist/evolution debate. Unless otherwise noted, most of the files are subject files which contain publications, articles, and letters to and from Stanley Weinberg relating to his work within the Committees of Correspondence and assistance with various publications and authors. Subject files of states (Arkansas, California, Iowa, Florida, Georgia,Texas) often contain material concerning court cases and legislation related to the teaching of creationism and evolution in public schools . For a related collection, please see the Evolution/Creation Archive (MS 181). |
The collection is organized alphabetically. |
