Historical note
The Master Brewers Association of the Americas (MBAA) was formed at a meeting held in Chicago during March 1887. The original name for the organization was the Master Brewers Association of the United States and Louis Frisch of Chicago was elected the first President. Other officers elected at that meeting were Henry Guenther of Cincinnati and William Gerst of Nashville (Vice Presidents); Konrad Koppitz of Detroit (Treasurer); and William J. Seib of Chicago (Secretary). Annual meetings were held from the time of the group's inception until the prohibition era with only two exceptions in 1892 and 1894. The national organization was kept intact during prohibition and officers called for a national meeting to be held in 1932 when it was clear prohibition would be repealed. At this meeting, the organization's name was changed to the Master Brewers Association of America. In 1976, the Association started accepting international memberships and was thus renamed the Master Brewers Association of the Americas. As of 2010, MBAA is a global organization with 24 districts throughout the world. According to its website, MBAA serves its industry by "...promoting, advancing, and improving the professional interest of brew and malt house production and technical personnel." MBAA offers educational and professional development opportunities to its members and provides for the exchange of information through publications, short courses, and conventions. |
Collection description
The collection (1887-[ongoing]) includes administrative records, committee records, constitutions and bylaws, convention materials, correspondence, meeting minutes, scholarship and award information, and St. Paul-Minneapolis District records. Committee files can include agendas, correspondence, minutes, and other related meeting materials. Convention materials can include Board of Governors meeting minutes, annual business meeting minutes, newsletters, and financial reports, and other supplemental reports. Historical information, including copies of the original charter and other founding documents, can be found in the collection. However, the bulk of the collection dates from 1950 onward leaving the first 60 years of the organization only sparsely documented, though lists of past officers and previous convention locations were created for the 75th annual convention in 1962. The collection also includes some records from the St. Paul-Minneapolis District. These materials include historical information on the district, meeting minutes, correspondence, and materials related to the district's centennial meeting in 2007. |
