Historical note

The Francis P. Garvan-John M. Olin Medal is awarded annually by the American Chemical Society to recognize distinguished service to chemistry by women chemists.

Originally known as the Garvan Medal, the award was established in 1936 through a donation from Francis P. Garvan, and the first Garvan Medal was presented to Emma P. Carr in 1937. The second and third medals were awarded in 1940 and 1942. Since 1946 the medal has been awarded annually.

From 1979 to 1983, the award was sponsored by W.R. Grace and Company. Since 1984 the Garvan-Olin Medal has been sponsored by the Olin Corporation.

Collection description

This collection (1981-2000, n.d.) contains information related to a survey of the women chemists awarded the Garvan Medal from 1937 to 1983. The survey was conducted by Molly Gleiser, and the project was overseen by the California Section of the American Chemical Society.

The collection contains an article "The Garvan Women" and an analysis of the survey by Molly Gleiser, as well as photocopies of survey data sheets on the Garvan Medalists from 1937 to 1983. The information collected includes general opinions from both men and women chemists about the Garvan Medal. The individual survey sheets include information on the medalists' family background, education, whether they experienced discrimination, the effect that winning the Garvan Medal had on them, and what advice they would give to young women scientists. Information on deceased medalists was obtained from relatives, former colleagues, and employers.

The collection also includes general information and correspondence related to the project, preliminary survey analysis tables, and programs for the 1999 and 2000 Garvan-Olin Medal presentations.
