The American Academy on Veterinary Disaster Medicine, Inc. (AAVDM) is an organization dedicated to providing a forum for the sharing of factual information on natural and man-made disasters that threaten the well-being of animals and the environment. The AAVDM was established in 1983 by several North American veterinarians attending the convention of "Physicians for Social Responsibility" in Brighton, England. The American Veterinary Academy on Disaster Medicine (AVADM), as it was originally named, held its first annual meeting in New Orleans in 1984. The first officers were Dr. Robert Shomer (President), Dr. Robert Linnabary (Vice President), and Dr. Ole Stalheim (Secretary/Treasurer). The Constitution and bylaws were adopted in 1987 and in 1994 the organization became incorporated as the American Academy on Veterinary Disaster Medicine, Inc. The original concerns prompting the formation of the group consisted of Cold War-era fears of biological, chemical, and nuclear disasters and their impact on animals and the ecosystem. Since the end of the cold war, the focus has shifted towards caring for animals and owners affected by huge scale natural disasters, such as hurricanes. To accomplish this purpose, the AAVDM holds continuing education workshops in disaster medicine in conjunction with the American Veterinary Medical Association conventions. Members are also active in presenting lectures, workshops, and discussion forums on veterinary disaster medicine for practicing veterinarians, veterinary schools, and emergency management officials. |
This collection (1983-[ongoing]) contains copies of the constitution and bylaws, correspondence and meeting minutes, newsletters, a membership directory, and a short history of the AAVDM. |
The collection is in chronological order. |
