Collection description

The collection (1938-1975, n.d.) contains biographical information, correspondence, radio scripts, speeches, a film, printed materials, publications, and photographs. The collection includes materials related to Groomes' farming activities and his involvement in the Iowa Association of School Boards and the Iowa Council for Better Education. Personal records documenting Groomes' nonprofessional activities and interests include a genealogy, photographs, correspondence, biographical information, date books, and materials relating to his hobbies, clubs, and the town of Menlo, Iowa. There is also information relating to the movie Cold Turkey, which was filmed in Greenfield, Iowa. The education materials relate to Groomes' activities with education associations, such as the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB), Iowa Council for Better Education (ICBE), and various school boards and include articles, meeting minutes, reports, correspondence, news clippings, and scripts. The education materials also contain information regarding radio programs and Groomes' book, The Boards and the Bees. Most of the radio scripts (from programs in which Groomes participated) relate to education, but other subjects are also included. Materials related to Groomes' farm operation include cattle sales, feedlot information, land allocation and yield, and finances. There are also speeches and scripts from radio and TV programs where Groomes spoke about farming and information regarding Groomes being an Iowa Master Farmer and member of the Iowa State Extension Advisory Committee. Included at the end of the collection are writings and a film, mostly by authors other than Groomes.
