Judith "Judy" Marie Callicott Vance was born in 1955 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She received her B.S. (1980), M.S. (1986), and Ph.D (1992) in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University. After graduation, Dr. Vance was hired as a Mechanical Engineer (1979-1984) at the John Deere Des Moines Works in Ankeny, Iowa. Dr. Vance then took the position of Adjunct Instructor (1984-1987) in the Division of Engineering Fundamentals and Multidisciplinary Design at Iowa State University and was later promoted to Assistant Professor (1987-1992) of the department. When the Division of Engineering Fundamentals and Multidisciplinary Design was dissolved, Dr. Vance became an Assistant Professor (1992-1997) of Mechanical Engineering. She was promoted to Associate Professor (1997-2003) and Professor (2003-present). Dr. Vance was also chosen to be Chair (2003-present) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. She is also a faculty fellow at Iowa State University's Virtual Reality Applications Center.

Dr. Vance's research interests lie primarily in the realm of virtual reality design applications. She has studied virtual reality applications in mechanical design, numerical methods that facilitate interactive design, and spatial mechanism design.

Dr. Vance is associated with several professional organizations. She is a member of Women in Engineering Leadership Institute, Society of Women Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, American Society for Engineering Education, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Xi.
