Abstract
Eugenia Sue Smith Farrar, biologist, was a professor of zoology and genetics at Iowa State University. Farrar's research focused on the biology of the endocrine system, where she investigated insulin in bullfrog tadpoles, the thyroid hormone content of fish eggs, and environmental hormone disruptors in amphibians. This collection contains biographical information, graduate student work, correspondence, teaching files, university committee files, research papers, and professional writings. A large portion of the collection is related to courses taught by Farrar, including courses on comparative anatomy, general and comparative endocrinology, human reproduction, and a course she helped develop on women in science and engineering. |
Historical note
Eugenia Sue Smith Farrar, originally of southern Illinois, attended the University of Illinois to earn her B.S. (1961), and the University of Michigan to earn both her M.S. and Ph.D. (1972). She joined Iowa State University in 1973 in the Department of Zoology, and concluded her career in 2006 as Associate Professor of Zoology and Genetics. During her 30-plus-year tenure at Iowa State, Farrar taught a wide range of courses such as comparative anatomy, general and comparative endocrinology, human reproduction, and women in science and engineering that she helped develop. Farrar was also a mentor to undergraduate and graduate students throughout the university, and assisted in developing mentoring programs for students in the sciences. Known for developing rapport with students, Farrar was honored for her teaching contributions with the Louis Thompson Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2005. Other honors and awards include the Cassling Family Faculty Award (2005), the Carrie Chapman Catt Sex Equity Award (1997), election to the Board of Directors of the Iowa Academy of Science (1995), and status as Emeritus Faculty (2006). In addition to excellence in teaching, Farrar continued to research and publish throughout her career, particularly in the area of the biology of the endocrine system, investigating insulin in bullfrog tadpoles, the thyroid hormone content of fish eggs, and environmental hormone disruptors and amphibians. |
Collection description
This collection (1962-2006, undated) contains biographical information, graduate student work, correspondence, teaching files, university committee files, research papers, and professional writings. A large portion of the collection is related to courses taught by Farrar, including courses on human reproduction, endocrinology, environmental biology, and vertebrate physiology. She also taught a women's studies course on women in science and engineering. These files contain course syllabi, lecture notes, and presentation materials. Farrar's research on the endocrinology and the effects of hormones on fish and amphibians is documented through grant proposals, research papers, publications, and lectures. |
