Abstract
Roger G. Ginder (b. 1946) worked as a Professor for the Department of Economics and an extension specialist in agribusiness management at Iowa State University (1978-2010). Much of Ginder's work focused on the management of farmers' cooperatives (co-ops) in the upper Midwest during the difficult economic years of the 1980s and 1990s. This collection contains lecture materials, research files, papers, proposals, and presentation notes. Much of these materials focus on farming debt, credit, loans, dairy marketing, and management training for cooperatives and their members during the farm crisis of the 1980s. |
Biographical note
Roger G. Ginder was born on May 17, 1946, in Jacksonville, Illinois. Ginder earned a B.S. (1968) and an M.S. (1969) in agricultural economics from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He earned a Ph.D. (1979) in agricultural economics from the University of Kentucky. Ginder began his professional career at the University of Delaware as an extension specialist in agricultural marketing (1969-1975). He researched the logistics system of a regional farm supply cooperative as a research associate at the University of Kentucky (1975-1978). He then became a Professor and extension specialist in agribusiness management for the Department of Economics at Iowa State University (1978-2010). Ginder's research work mostly dealt with farmers' cooperatives (co-ops) in the upper Midwest. He gave presentations and held workshops to help local co-ops navigate the farm crisis of the 1980s and 1990s by educating managers and members on growth, farm credit and debt, and rapidly changing economic conditions. Ginder authored many articles that were published in agriculture-related journals. He also wrote staff papers, research reports, bulletins, and articles for the extension departments of the University of Delaware and Iowa State University. Roger Ginder married Rochelle Daum in 1968 in Illinois. They had two children, Derek and Nathaniel. Ginder retired from Iowa State University in 2010. |
Collection description
The collection (1970-2007, undated) contains lecture notes, photocopies of articles published in agriculture-related journals, unpublished and pre-published papers, and materials from presentations and workshops that were held for farmers' co-ops across the upper Midwest. Much of these materials focus on farming debt, credit, loans, dairy marketing, and management training for cooperatives and their members during the difficult economic times of the 1980s farm crisis. The collection also includes several testimonies given to the U.S. Senate and other organizations such as the Farm Credit Association (FCA). A variety of workshops are included, with topics such as farm cooperatives, farm business, and management of co-ops. |
