Abstract

Agricultural economist and editor at the Des Moines Register and Tribune. Lauren Soth was born in Sibley, Iowa, in 1910. He received B.S. (1932) and M.S. (1938) degrees from Iowa State University. Soth was in charge of economic information at Iowa State from 1934-1947 and was an editorial writer for the Des Moines Register and Tribune from 1947-1954. He was editor of the newspaper's editorial pages from 1954 until his retirement in 1975. Soth received a Pulitzer Prize (1956) for editorial writing encouraging a U.S.-Soviet agricultural exchange. He is the author of several books regarding agriculture. The collection includes correspondence, manuscripts of publications, photographs, published articles and editorials, and speeches. There is material documenting the U.S.-Russian agricultural exchange of 1955 and Soth's U.S.S.R. trip the same year. The collection also contains speeches and talks on the Wolf Ladejinsky affair, the oleomargarine controversy at Iowa State University during World War II, agricultural economics, and the National Planning Association. There is correspondence about farm policy in the 1970s and 1980s, and material on agricultural issues such as animal rights, food and export policy, and land usage.

Biographical note

Lauren Kephart Soth (1910-1998) was born in Sibley, Iowa, the son of Michael Ray Soth and Virginia Mabel (Kephart) Soth. He was raised in a series of small towns throughout Iowa, including Alton, Marathon, Wyoming, and Holstein, due to his father's profession as a school superintendent. At a young age, he worked as a printer's devil and as a sports reporter for his father's journalism sideline, particularly at the Holstein Advance, and also worked for a local farmer.

Soth enrolled at Iowa State College (University) in 1927, where he began his study of agricultural journalism. He received a B.S. (1932) in journalism and an M.S. (1938) in agricultural economics. He received an honorary degree from Grinnell College in 1990.

Soth was in charge of economic information at Iowa State from 1934-1947 and was then hired as an editorial writer (1947-1954) for the Des Moines Register and Tribune. He became editor (1954-1975) of the newspaper's editorial pages and held that position until his retirement. Soth received the Pulitzer Prize (1956) for editorial writing for encouraging U.S.-Soviet agricultural exchange. He is the author of Farm Trouble (1957), Farm Policy for the Sixties (1961), An Embarrassment of Plenty (1965), Agriculture in an Industrial Society (1966), and The Farm Policy Game Play by Play (1989).

Collection description

This collection (1945-1976, undated) contains correspondence and information in regards to professional activities and foreign trips, as well as news clippings and photographs. Of particular interest are the portions of the collection dedicated to the U.S.-Soviet Farm Delegate Exchanges that took place in the 1950s. These materials consist of editorials, news articles, correspondence, and some photographs. Another large part of the collection is devoted to Soth's professional correspondence. This material covers the time period during which he worked for the Des Moines Register and Tribune. Among his correspondents were members of Iowa State's faculty, Extension Service staff, and state and national politicians.

Another large part of the collection contains Soth's writings. These include articles written for publication in newspapers and journals and manuscripts prepared for publication as books. These articles primarily focus on agricultural themes, but also touch on politics, foreign policy, and rural education.

Soth was instrumental in encouraging an exchange of U.S. and Soviet Union farm delegates. His 1955 editorial suggesting an exchange is sometimes credited as the "catalyst" for Khrushchev coming to Iowa. The materials in this collection document the trips made by the delegates and include correspondence, news articles and editorials, and photographs. The bulk of the material relates to the 1955 delegation exchange, but the collection also has information concerning several other related events including the European tour of American journalists touring the Marshall Plan countries (1951), the United States tour by the Soviet Agricultural Minister, K.G. Pysin (1962), and the American Society of Newspaper Editors People-to-People Tour of Russia (1962).
