Helen Blanch (Vermeer) Hayes was born July 15, 1917, to Dr. and Mrs. Gerrett E. Vermeer. She graduated from Sheldon High School in 1934 and then attended Iowa State College (University) where she received her B.S. (1939) in dietetics. In college, Helen was a member of Kappa Delta, Home Economics Club, Iowa State Players, Y.W.C.A. and the Health Council. She also assisted in the publication of two college magazines: Iowa Homemaker and Green Gander. Helen married Woody Vance Hayes on January 2, 1946, in Silver City, New Mexico. As of 2005, she resided in Hampton, Virginia. |
The collection (1917-1946, n.d.) contains biographical information, photographs, diplomas, a baby book and loose scrapbook pages. The scrapbook pages include many scenic vacation photographs and images of possible family members, though almost all the photographs are unidentified. Helen's school autograph book was likely completed while she was in junior high school and includes notes and signatures from teachers, friends, and family. |
The collection is organized chronologically. |
