Roger Melvin Goetz was born in 1940 to Dr. and Mrs. Charles A. Goetz, Sr. in Chicago, Illinois. The family moved from the Chicago suburb of Glen Ellyn to Ames, Iowa, in 1948. Goetz earned his B.S. (1962) in chemistry, and later a B.S. (1967) in mathematics, from Iowa State University. Goetz then enrolled at the University of Wisconsin to further his chemistry studies, but within the first year decided to enter into the ministry of the Lutheran Church. He enrolled at Concordia Theological Seminary which was then in Springfield, Illinois. He received his Master of Divinity Degree (1967) in systematic theology from Concordia. He then received a Divine Call into the Holy Ministry and was ordained on July 7, 1968, at Memorial Lutheran Church and Student Center in Ames. One of the constants in Goetz's life is his joy of playing the organ. At a young age he began studying piano and organ. Through high school and college he was an assistant church organist at Memorial Lutheran Church and Student Center in Ames. He continued with his studies through college and eventually received the Master of Sacred Theology Degree (1972) in church music from Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Following his ordination, Goetz served as Associate Pastor (1968-1980) at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Minnesota, where he was also organist and choirmaster. There he met and married Betty Jean Bokelheide and they had one daughter, Anne-Katherine. In 1980, he accepted a call to St. John's Lutheran Church, Topeka, Kansas, where he serves as Associate Pastor, Organist, and Choirmaster. He is (as of 2010) semi-retired at St. John's. |
The collection (1962-2016) contains articles, biographical information, class handouts, news clippings, sermons, and sheet music for carillon. The biographical information includes news clippings, awards certificates, a biography of Goetz from the St. John's website, and a program from Goetz's ordination ceremony. The articles contained in the collection include Goetz's contribution to the Topeka Lutheran School yearbook, an article on Advent, and a discussion on celebrating Holy Communion every Sunday. Teachings and discussions of Biblical scripture are included in Goetz's Bible class handouts and sermons. The handouts contain his notes related to various topics discussed in class including: persecution of the Christians, the second coming of Christ, seasons of the church year, and the Augsburg Confession. The collection also contains a number of sermons by Goetz which he organized based on the Biblical text each examines. In addition, the collection contains three music pieces for carillon composed by Goetz. The sheet music, the first two published by American Carillon Music Editions in 2008, includes Ritornello (Theme and Variations), The Setting of a Summer Sun, and Sorrow Turned to Joy. The collection also contains the history of St. John's Lutheran Church in Topeka, Kansas written by Goetz, as well as sheet music for a piece composed by Goetz in memory of his daughter. |
The collection is organized alphabetically with biographical information filed in front and sermons organized by order of the Biblical texts. |
