Charles N. Dietz was born on July 18, 1853 in Oneonta, New York. His family moved to Anamosa, Iowa, while he was still a small child. In the fall of 1869 he drove a lumber wagon to Ames to enroll at Iowa Agricultural College (Iowa State University). Arriving several days before the school officially opened, he arranged for lodging at a local farm house and the next day went to work moving furniture into Old Main. Within a day or two more students began to arrive. He graduated at the age of nineteen with a Bachelor of Science degree (1872). After graduation, he moved to Chicago and worked for a lumber business. In the late 1880s he opened the Sheridan Coal Mine in Sheridan, Wyoming and owned the coal company until 1903. In 1890 he and his wife, Nettie Woodford Dietz, built a home in Omaha where they entertained frequently. Dietz died on June 18, 1933. |
