Abstract
Business classes have been offered at Iowa State since the early 1920s. The College of Business Administration was established in 1984 and in 1991 the name was changed to the College of Business. This collection contains photographs created by the College of Business and includes images of faculty and staff, events hosted or sponsored by the College, and physical spaces used by the College including renovations to Carver Hall, demolition of Osborn Cottage, and construction of the Gerdin Business Building. |
Historical note
Business classes have been offered at Iowa State since the early 1920s. At that time, they were offered under the curriculum of Business Engineering in the Department of Economics. The name of the curriculum changed in 1929 to Engineering Economics and further changed to Industrial Economics in the late 1930s. During this time, the administration allowed the Industrial Economics sub-discipline to operate fairly autonomously from the rest of the Department of Economics and Sociology. In 1955, separate status was approved and the Department of Industrial Administration was created under department head William H. Schrampfer. The department was placed in the Division of Science (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences). At the time, the Department of Industrial Administration included 299 business major students and 11 faculty members. In 1968, William H. Thompson was named department head, and enrollment grew to 715 business major students and 17 faculty members. In 1975, the population increased to 1,340 business majors under the leadership of department chair Lynn Loudenback. The Industrial Administration Department offered undergraduate programs for those in the business-oriented positions in industry and government. Graduate degrees were not offered in Industrial Administration until 1975, when the M.A. was approved. In 1980, the Department of Industrial Administration changed its name to the School of Business Administration, and then became the College of Business Administration in 1984. In 1991, the name was changed to the College of Business. |

This collection (1984-2001, undated) contains photographs and slides pertaining to the College of Business at Iowa State University. These images document faculty and staff, events hosted or sponsored by the College of Business, and physical spaces used by the College of Business including renovations to Carver Hall, demolition of Osborn Cottage, and construction of the Gerdin Business Building. |
