Biographical note

Julius Ansgar Larsen (1877-1977) was born in Drammen, Norway. He moved to the United States as a teenager to live with his sister in Connecticut. He received his B.A. (1908) and Master’s in forestry (1910) from Yale University and his Ph.D. (1936) from Iowa State College (University).

Before joining the Iowa State College Forestry Department, Larsen worked with the U.S. Forest Service in Idaho and Montana where he was director (1918-1924) of the Northern Rocky Mountain Experiment Station.

Larsen began his career at Iowa State as an Assistant Professor (1924-1947). Although he retired in 1947, Larsen continued part-time activities as an Associate Professor (1947-1950).

Larsen wrote approximately thirty articles over the course of his career, many focusing on trees in the northern Rocky Mountains. Forest fires were of particular interest to him and became a significant subject of his research and investigations. He held membership in the Society of American Foresters, the American Ecological Society, and the Iowa Academy of Science.

Larsen married Jenny Spieckermann of Oslo, Norway (1911). Together, they had two children, Einar and Margaret. Dr. and Mrs. Larsen are buried in the Iowa State Cemetery.
