Abstract

Carl W. Mize is Professor Emeritus of Forestry in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management. His research interests include forest growth and yield, modeling the effect of agricultural field shelterbelts on crop production, and forest biometry. The collection contains biographical information and copies of Mize's papers. The papers include research on hardwood tree species, tropical tree species, street-tree species, fungi research, and the effects of tree shelterbelts on agricultural production in the Midwestern United States.

Biographical note

Carl Wesley Mize was born on July 2, 1947 in Loma Linda, California. He received his B.A. (1969) in mathematics and chemistry from Brockport State University, his M.S. (1973) in forest ecology from Humboldt State College, and his Ph.D. (1977) in quantitative silviculture from the State University of New York (SUNY). His professional experience included employment as Visiting Scientist at Weyerhaeuser Research Centers in Arkansas (1979) and Washington (1983), Teaching and Research Associate (1974-1977) at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and Teaching and Research Associate (1971-1972) at Humboldt State College. He accepted the position of Assistant Professor (1977-1986) in the Department of Forestry at Iowa State University and was promoted to Associate Professor (1986-2007). Mize retired in 2007.

Mize had multiple research interests including developing growth models and techniques for evaluating site quality, agricultural buffer strips and windbreaks, and growth and yield studies of tropical forest species. Mize was a member of the Society of American Foresters and the International Society of Tropical Foresters. His activities included the Agricultural College Curriculum Committee, Faculty Senate, Forestry Club Advisor, Forestry Department Retreat Committee, Forestry Graduate Students Association Adviser, Forestry Curriculum Committee Chair, and ISU Ballroom Dance Club Advisor.
