John Crosby Eldredge was born April 21, 1886 in Earlville, Delaware County, Iowa. He received a B.S. (1915) in Agronomy from Iowa State College, an M.S. (1925), and a Ph.D. (1933). Eldredge worked as a County Agent (1915-1920) in Emmet County. He took a position with the Emmetsburg Seed Company in 1920, where he worked for more than a year. In 1921, he joined the faculty at Iowa State College with an appointment of Assistant Professor (1921-1937). He became an Associate Professor in 1937, and was elected to the Graduate Faculty in 1939. He remained a member of faculty until his retirement in 1960, but continued to work for the University serving on the Committee on Agricultural Development into the 1970's. Eldredge specialized in the research and development of popcorn hybrids. He produced many of the varieties with the identifier, Iopop, most notably, Iopop 6. He also operated Ames Seed Farm, a hybrid seed company south of Ames, Iowa in the Kelley, Iowa area in the 1940's. The firm primarily produced corn, popcorn, and oat seed. He died in Ames, Iowa, on March 15, 1976 and is buried in the Iowa State University Cemetery. |
The collection includes biographical information, correspondence, personal records, clippings, government forms, booklets, blueprints, and photographs and negatives, related to the life and work of John Crosby Eldredge. The biographical information includes Iowa State College alumni information forms, press releases, and an obituary. The correspondence relates to his farm loans, seed corn from Ames Seed Farm, popcorn varieties with confections Incorporated, a caramel corn company, and alumni activities of the Iowa State College Class of 1915. The personal records contain loan application material, leases (1935), notes, an eviction letter for a tenant, and aerial photographs related to the Ames Seed Farm (1938-1945). The government documents include material from the Department of Agriculture such as Application for Payment from the Agricultural Adjustment Administration soil conservation program and a cropping plan for 1937. The collection contains stamps and form s related to rationing during World War II. A Farm Defense Plan for 1942 is included as well. Ames Seed Farm material includes promotional material from the 1940's sales manuals, seven negatives and photographs of a corn drying barn, orders for popcorn for 1948, memberships and booklets from the Story County Farm Bureau, and blueprints for a corn dryer. The published works include Agricultural Experiment Station Bulletins and correspondence related to Eldredge's salary from 1943-1955, 1970. Alumni materials consist of information from class reunions and mementos. |
